Tiny tubes making waves in kayak design
Re-Turn AS is using Baytubes® carbon nanotubes from Bayer MaterialScience to make kayaks faster and more stable.

Some new kayak prototypes have now been coated with an epoxy gelcoat modified with Baytubes® that has been developed by Norwegian research company Re-Turn AS, based in Gamle Fredrikstad. Thanks to the carbon nanotubes from Bayer MaterialScience the outer skin of the kayak is more abrasion-resistant. They also ensure that cracks appear less frequently over long-term use. The picture shows Stein Dietrichson, managing director of Re-Turn, Paal Francis Hansen, chairman of the board, and a trainee during a trial run (from right to left).

Investments in new laboratory equipment at Re-Turn AS:

In order to efficiently perform in house advanced testing of the new nanomodified coating- and composite products under development in the mixing lab, Re-Turn has invested in advanced test equipment over the last 3 months.
New, advanced equipment for the measuring of contact angles/hydrophobicity (see photo by Sverre C. Jarild), one Q-panel and one Xenon UV-test machine, colour measuring equipment etc. In addition the mixing lab has become a modern viscosity test apparatus.
The investment program is planned to continue during the rest of 2010 where a larger microscope and a tensile test machine are on the list.
The new equipment will help Re-Turn in speeding up the development of new products more cost efficiently. The instrument test lab will also offer services to local industry and development partners.
